Should I be concerned about a friends baby?

Hi everyone

A good friend of mine moved to spain a year or so ago and has a 11 month old dd. She really is gorgeous by the way! She is currently over here with dd to visit family and friends.

I went over to pick her up ready for a day out with our dd's and realised that her dd wasn't really much bigger than the last time I saw her when she was around 5 months old. I didn't really think anything of it and just assumed that she was simply a small baby, but then my friend said that she wasn't sitting up unaided yet. She was really concerned about her not crawling, but I reassured her that that's quite common. My dd didn't either, she just stood up one day and started toddling around.

My friend's clearly very stressed and I would imagine is suffering with PND as she's showing all the signs. I don't want to upset her unnecessarily, but she did ask me the question "do you think it's normal that she's not able to sit up?" I don't know what to say. I know she spends a lot of time in her walker and suggested that that could have something to do with it. I really don't know.

Is this more common than I realise? Should I be completely honest and agree that yes, it is unusual at this age?

Really appreciate some advice on this.

Thanks for reading.

I think you should say that you are not sure but that if she is worried then she should go and see a Dr, either here or in Spain.

Well she did actually ask me if I should take her to the GP and I said that if she was concerned she should.

if, at 11 months she is no bigger than she was at 5 months (really? does she have her weighed etc?) and can't even sit up unaided then yes, i would b e very concerned actually.

and yes, while she is here I would get her to go and see a GP

My 11 month old DD isn't much bigger now than she was at 5 months - we were commenting on that yesterday actually. Still wearing the same clothes she was in November. She was a pretty big newborn and grew like a weed for first 5-6 months then just seems to have stopped, except for her head! Result is a baby just below 0.4 on the chart for height but 75 for weight and over 99.8 for head circ. She sounds weird but actually looks fine.

But she's really strong. Can crawl, stand, sit etc.

I'd say if it was just size, I'd not be fussed. But not sitting at 11 months does sound a bit late and I'd get her checked out. Won't take long and would really put your friends mind at rest.

Hth.

My dd is almost a year and has always been petite. My friends dd is only 5 months and not much smaller.

My dd can sit up well but isn't crawling, however when I look at our dd's you can just tell that my dd is older, by the was she interacts with us and plays with her toys.

She should speak to a HV if she's worried.
