Sitting in the doorway- anyone else got this going on?

Our ds, 1 next week (v exciting) , is totally obsessed with sitting in the doorway, peering through the totgate + making a bid for the kitchen at every opportunity. We have tried showing him whats out there ie kitchen, bathroom, hallway, stairs, + tried to explain that we dont want him to hurt himself. He doesnt get it as yet, + seems convinced that it needs to be checked out. Fair enough. Its just really difficult when he sits in the doorway all the time! he also posts his toys through the bars. Ive tried numerous things, which sometimes work, to keep him interested in his other toys + play area but it seems it cant compete. Anyone else had this? any suggestions please!!

The nursery near me has windows open in the summer onto the high st, there is then a few inch gap and a metal fence, there are always toys on the floor in the gap! Kids love posting things, thing how many toys are designed around that concept.

he just wants what he can't have, like the rest of us
17mo dd2's favourite place to sit and look at books is halfway up the stairs, for the same reason.
