I need some advice my 7 year old son has all the symptoms for ADHD at school and at home this has been going on for over 2 years and is now getting worse and its causing problems at home and he is very behind at school . I have been to the doctors and they have said they cant refer him it has to be through school and school are saying its a medical issue so it has to be the doctor. I cant afford to go private and dont see also why I should . Has anyone else had this situation , the doctor even admitted there may be problems but they still are saying they cant refer him . I am at my wits end and its making us all unhappy .

Not got much advice sorry but there should be someone in charge of SENCO at school, could you find out who it is and ask for an assessment?

Your GP can refer for this, but believe me I know how hard it can be to get them to make a referal.

I needed an emergency referal for ENT for my son, and initally GP refused. I found booking another appointment, and then saying 'I am coming to an appointment every day until you make the referal, so let's stop wasting time and fax it over now', to be very effective. I took dh with me for support - I think having someone go in with you, whether you need their support or not, makes it very clear that you are not to be messed with.

Quite possibly your GP doesn't know who to refer to. Best place to start is if you have a community paedatrician linked with the school - you're school will be able to tell you who that is.

Well done for contacting Family Info Service - keep pressuring them and your GP, sounds like the quicker you get the referal the better.

Your GP is talking rubbish. I went to my GP and he referred my son although he didn't think there was anything wrong with him. He was diagnosed with ADHD.
