How well should a 19 month old boy talk ??

My 19 month old DS doesnt say very many words at all - Mummy, Daddy, Alice (sister) hiya and about 3 more!

Is this normal? My DD at the same age had a huge vocabulary, so I wonder if its just a boy thing?

I think it's normal. My 22 month old ds only says hello, dada and just recently doggie!!

Don't think it's a boy thing, just an individual child thing. My eldest ds could speak in short sentences and hold a reasonable conversation at 19m. 2nd ds still hardly spoke at 2y5m but picked up quickly from there on. Took ds2 too gp thinking something wrong but he said that I only noticed because of the difference between ds2 and ds1. It's just one of those examples of different rates of development in different areas.

nothing to do with boys - DS1 was speaking in clear sentences by that age, DS2 barely uttered a word until he was 2 and at nursery.

other way round for me
ds sentences at 11 mths, dd only just doing it now at 39 months
do not think it is gender specific, toilet training often is though...

Ds was hardly saying anything at 19 months but all of a sudden at about 22 months he learnt to talk in sentences. Very bizarre, it literally happened over about a fortnight.

DT2 (boy) doesn't say a thing. Bless him! He's 23months, 2 next weekend. DT1 on the otherhand, well she speaks for England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Sentences the whole shebang!

DS said his first word at 14m, 2m earlier than his sis, and more legibly than ds1's first word (12m). I kind of thought it was about time one of my kids talked early. But... nooooooo.... DS2 is about the same as the others now at 19m. All my kids have missed early language "milestones"; especially DS1 who was described by his reception teacher as "very articulate" (so I know not to worry at this stage).

Thats reassuring, thanks - by the way I am v thick, he is 23 months not 19!!

I try not to compare, but when something worries me about him, I automatically think "what did DD do at that age?" silly, i know.

As for toilet training - ha - not doing THAT for at least 7 more months!
