How are you meant to calculate babies age?

Dd is 5 months tomorrow as she was born on 22 October. At preschool another mum and I were chatting and she said her son was 5 months on Friday, he was 4 November. She said that "babies age is calculated on a lunar month basis and that it's wrong to go by the date". So who is right?

I have never ever heard of using the lunar month!

tantrumsandballoons · 21/03/2012 10:06

I have no idea.......but WTAF is a "lunar month"????

Seona1973 · 21/03/2012 10:08

she's talking mince! Her son is not 5 months until 4th April

MamaMaiasaura · 21/03/2012 10:08

I don't know what a lunar month is Blush. Just said I'd stick to date as she's already growing up so fast

do you mean she counts every 4 weeks as a month?

Flisspaps · 21/03/2012 10:09
Confused

She sounds a bit...misguided (that's the kindest way I can think of putting it!)

You calculate a baby's age the same way as you'd calculate anyone else's!

haloflo · 21/03/2012 10:09

So they are 13 lunar months by the time they are 1??? If she is that bothered to be exact about her babies age then she should tell you how many weeks her baby is!

ChunkyPickle · 21/03/2012 10:10

Lunar month? WTH? Your're right, she's being loony.

haloflo · 21/03/2012 10:11

A lunar month is 4 weeks exactly. Some people calculate pregnancies like this - so they would say they are 4 months when only 16 weeks. Its not accurate though as clearly some months are longer than others and there aren't 13 months in a year.

Seona1973 · 21/03/2012 10:11

p.s. if there were 4 weeks in a month we would have 13 months in a year!

MamaMaiasaura · 21/03/2012 10:12

www.calculator.net/age-calculator.html?today=10%2F22%2F2011&ageat=03%2F21%2F2012&x=75&y=9 found this. So she's talking poo

But if you are "supposed" to use lunar months for babies, when do you stop?

Or are we supposed to do that for the rest of our lives??
I don't like that idea, I would then technically be older than my ACTUAL age Sad

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 21/03/2012 10:21

She's talking twaddle. If she wants to count weeks, fair enough, her son is 20 weeks. But a month is a month and he's only four and a half months.

MamaMaiasaura · 21/03/2012 10:21

Good point. Eek so I'm 36 and extra month a year would make 3 years older and make me 39. No thank you
