Do commando crawlers progress to 'normal' crawling?

DS is currently commando crawling, which he combines with rolling to get anywhere he wants to go. He's fast, but it looks like such hard work! Do they move on from commando or is he likely to stick with it?

my ds commando crawled for a month before crawling 'normally' then walked a month after that.

yes, lots of children commando crawl before proper crawling.

It only gets worse, once a child can stand up and climb the world is their oyster.

lol...

DS (is it just boys that do this? DD didn't!) commando'd from 7 months.
Crawled for about one week only, he got to his feet and moved around on furniture and walls much more reliably.
Then he walked independently bang on 12m

My son never crawled 'normally' until long after he could walk! He did sort of a commando/one leg under him thing for ages.

And, no, it's not just boys. My niece does it now, she's 8 months at the moment and looks like she's going to actually walk soon and never actually crawl! Her mum is Shock!

Took my little boy around a month to get from commando (with only one arm Grin) and rolling to up on all 4's. I think that was just out of laziness cause he could pause on all 4's to play. I'm sure he'll get there!

DS commandoed from 8 months but then went straight to walking at 10 months

I have video of DD commando crawling but I don't really remember her doing for long, but she because a very speedy normal crawler and then walked at 13 months.

2 of my boys did it, they crawled at 7months and it took them a while to get enough strength to push themselves up onto hands and knees. To start with it was just frantic desperation to move any way possible.

Thanks everyone, sounds like I'll just have to wait and see! He already pulls himself up to stand, which I thought happened after crawling, but I guess they just do what they can.

All of mine started by commando crawling. 2 of them went on fairly quickly to ordinary crawling. Dd2 didn't, but probably because she's missing her hand it was harder. She was still the fastest (and youngest) crawler in toddler group though Grin

DD was a hardcore bum shuffler and never crawled - although oddly will occasionally crawl now and she has been alking ages!

Ozziegirly · 21/03/2012 11:34

Mine commando crawled at 6 months and then moved onto what we called "the meerkat" as he would commando accross the floor and then pop up onto all fours, look around and then back onto his tummy to commence crawling. He then figured out normal crawling (via a short stage of going backwards), stood at 7 months and walked a couple of weeks before his birthday.

DD commando crawled around 10 months and then started pulling up on the furniture around 12 months. Then she started normal crawling and gradually dropped the commando. She has justed started walking at 16 months.
