My newborn sleeps SO MUCH. Too much?

3rd child. 12 days old.

I have never had one that sleeps before. Can this possibly be normal?

She only wakes once or twice a night for a 5 minute feed and back to sleep.

This morning she slept from 7.30 until I lifted her into the car at 10. Went back to sleep in the car. Very quick feed (couple of minutes) at about 10.30 and then back to sleep. Slept through until about 2.30 when I got her up and fed her. She was sort of stirring, but definitely not howling for a feed. Then she slept all afternoon until I poked her at about 5. Quick feed and back to sleep.

She seems to be putting on weight - she was weighed last week and all fine, plus I can see her growing chubby cheeks and a double chin. And we have plenty of wet and pooey nappies.

But... my last two fed endlessly and constantly and I couldn't put them down. This one falls asleep on her changing mat if I leave her after changing her nappy Confused.

My DS slept a lot, he was my first (and only) so I never had anyone to compare him with but he went to sleep perfectly well at night (in his own room) - napped very regularly most of the day, never 'cried/whinged', I read about threads where parents are having to comfort/hold their crying baby all day and all night and makes me remember that I never had to do that. Once he started going to morning playschool he would sleep all afternoon too - and still go to bed at 7pm. Grin

Hate to admit this but I followed GF routine

As a newborn my DD would fall asleep at the end of a feed, sleep through subsequent nappy change and stay asleep (in moses basket) for anywhere between 2 and 4 hours. She started sleeping through the night at about 2 or 3 months old (that stopped once she started teething, mind). This wasn't down to anything we did or didn't do as parents, we were just lucky.

I don't think you need to worry. Just enjoy it while it lasts :)

Mine all slept a lot as newborns. I found they "woke up" around 6 weeks. As she is your third, she is probably getting a lot more stimulation (noise etc) when awake, maybe that is why she needs to sleep more? Anyway - sounds normal - enjoy!

1st dc was like this, slept through from 6 weeks, I thought it was because I was doing such a brilliant job, Grin
the next 4 dc's proved me wrong, I just got lucky with a sleeper for my first.
Enjoy and congratulations

Thanks for the reassurance. I think she is awake a little more every day. Still sleeps an AWFUL lot though. I feel like a fraud! I've nothing to do! Grin

My 2nd and 3rd did this looking back it was great but a little boring Lol, I think they were 5 or 6 weeks when they were a little more alert.
