Been trying to teach my ds how to tie laces on and off for a while but he's not getting it, any tips?

Try making the left lace a different colour from the right one.

Good idea i'll try that one. He struggles keeping it tight enough whilst making the loops and looping through. Any suggestions

You could try the Montessori approach. video on YouTube covers it at about 2:50 in (excuse the horrid accents!). I've not tried it with DCs so I don't know if it works, but lots of people swear by Montessori.

We did it with different coloured laces.
The keeping it tight enough was an issue though, DS learned when he was 5 and to be honest I think he was 7 before he could tie them tight, we were constantly stoppoing to re-tie but practise makes perfect and all that!
We also found that 'flat' laces stayed tied and much tighter than the 'round' ones especially the kind of waxed/shiny round ones....hope that makes sense!

I cut out a shoe shaped piece of card and put a long adult size flat lace in it, my 4 year old DS learnt in 2 days, I then used the long laces in his shoes, a bit of a pain as they were quite long but at first it was easier for him to tie, now he can tie any laces.

Taught both of mine by doing loops and then knotting the loops IYKWIM. Seems easier to manage and keep tight than the complicated "Make a loop, loop the other lace around, tuck it under, pull it through" method I was taught.

How old is he?

DD just 'got it' age about 7 or so (maybe 8) when she got a pair of cool shoes with laces

I think at some point it just comes easily, maybe easier if younger to just buy velcro shoes?!
