Tongue sucking

My DS who is 13 months has sucked his tongue since he was a few months old. Does anyone else's LO do this? I have never encountered it before, is it a problem?

He does it most of the time, but always when upset, tired or having cuddles. But TBH 90% of the day he is doing it.

I wouldn't say it's a problem but it can lead to reflux if it occurs after eating, so keep an eye on it. Can you distract him instead? Give him something to chew on?

My dd is 9 and still does it when she's tired, it's not caused her any problems except looking a bit silly when she's doing it!

DD who is 5 does it to get to sleep or when tired. Not as much as your DS but I wouldn't see it as a problem.

Interested to see that your 9 year old still does it ClaimedbyMe - I thought it was the newborn tongue thrust thing and they stopped being able to before then.

My sister still does it and she's 27! Shock

It has never caused her any problems and it's not obvious when she's doing it, only to me and our parents Grin

Apparently i did it the majority of my childhood. I'm 40 this year & i don't do it anymore. HTH Wink

My niece does it and she's 24! Grin

I do it when tired - think it looks a bit silly & makes my husband laugh, but it's mainly in bed when trying to get to sleep and over tired. It seemed to come back after the birth of my son when I was exhausted and going off to sleep. It hasn't caused any problems. :-)

I'm 32 and I still do it Blush

I seem to do it when I'm relaxed, don't even notice it anymore until someone points it out!
