Ventouse delivery - bump on head

My 11 week old DD was delivered via a Ventouse, which had to be attached twice as it came off the first time they tried to pull her out. At the time, she had a scab round the area. After a couple of weeks, there was a swelling on top of her head.

At her 6 wk check I got the doctor to look at it, he gave it a good squeeze and said it was fine and that it should go within another 4 weeks. It doesn't seem to cause her any discomfort when we touch it or when the doc squeezed it. Its now 5 weeks later and it hasn't reduced at all. I asked the health visitor last week about it and she said I could go back to the doc, but that they wouldn't do anything about it.

Did anyone else have a similar bump on their child's head? How long did it take to clear up? I do need to speak to the doc soon, so going to ask his advice, but wondering about other experiences from Ventouse deliveries.

Hi, my DS had a ventouse delivery and a really odd shaped head and a tear all around the edge of where the ventouse attached and rotated to pull him out. It was hideous but healed very quickly and I'd say the swelling went down by 2 weeks.

I know that babies have very soft plates in their scull to allow for delivery, perhaps it's just a while before they knit together properly again. I was really worried DS would have a cone head! But he is fine now Smile

DS had attempt ventouse delivery and had it attached twice and lots of pulling. He had a big bump bruise and scab, and it took months for it to go. I remember 'celebrating' his 6th month and there was still a mark on his head. I wouldn't be surprised if there was still a little scaring under his hair. I can't remember when the swelling and bruise went down, but I think it was gone within a few weeks. The scab stayed a lot longer and a mark/ring around where the bruising was.

Sounds like the doc was a bit optimistic that the bump would go so soon. Looks like fluid retention with DD, the scarring appears to have gone, although she does have cradle cap which could be covering it up.

My neice had this when she was born, from ventouse delivery.
Dsis's HV said they could calcify and take a year to disappear. Dsis's took her to a cranial osteopath and it went within two days - worth a try.

Interesting that you mention a cranial osteopath as I was thinking about that as an option and was looking into local practitioners the other day.

Yes, had the cone head thing from ventouse. Just asked DH how long it took to go- he said a good couple of months, so I guess that's not that far off you guys. I know it looks a bit alarming but if the professionals are not worried I would try to chill out if you can.

It's likely a cephahaematoma (a big bruise on the head), if it's not bothering her I wouldn't be too worried
