A good teether for a 5 month old???

My DD is an early teether but in the last couple of weeks it has really kicked in and I need a good teether toy for her.

She is frantic with trying to chomp on anything and everything but the teether I got her, though good, is turning out to be a hazard. It is a key shaped one.

She can be a very energetic baby and when she is trying to get the teether in her mouth, can very easily get frustrated and start frantically hitting herself in the face with it, and quite hard hits too.

She also gets very upset when she drops it, which happens a lot as she swings it back and forth to get it into her mouth.

Can anyone recommend a teether toy or teething solution? It seems all the teethers I have seen may end up being smacked into her eye

Have you tried the soft ones that are filled with water that you can cool in the fridge. They come in various shapes and sizes

My 5 m.o son loves chomping on his Sophie Giraffe, soft rubber so shouldn't hurt when he bashes himself with it!

My DD has two teeth already and is the same age. I spent a small fortune on teethers by nuby, MAM etc but she teeths on some ELC 'linky loops' I bought her for Christmas. They are light and easy for her to get into her mouth. They are £4.

She also likes material and teeths on a clean, wet flannel.

Also, they don't hurt when she smacks hersef in the head while flinging them around!

In a couple of weeks when you start on solids you can try bread lollies - bits of frozen bread straight from the freezer. They work a treat.

The teether of choice from me and the dentists in my family is the humble carrot.

Natural and edible it's the best teether out there by far. Simply Get a small fresh carrot and wash it before chopping/whittling it to baby hand size and sticking them in the fridge to cool before use.

You can make a "carrot pendant" by getting some string and needling it about one third of the way down the carrot. This ensures the carrot does not land on the floor when dropped from the hand.

The other thing you can do is a "carrot watch" where you get a small plastic band and slip it in a small slit in the carrot and wrap it around the babies wrist. This way the baby can crawl around with the carrot on the top of the hand.

Every night just ditch whatever is left of the carrot and slip in a new one ready for the mornings comping.

But to be honest early teethers your better off giving Ashton & Parsons powders to.

The way my DD is going I think I am going to try out all your ideas over the next few days.

This is silly but I was worried about the water filled teether bursting because she bites down so hard, or her choking on a bit of carrot (I did think of this before) but I will definitely try them.

I had them for DS and he chomped away happily for hours. No chance of choking or hitting themselves with it as the outside is like a dummy and the inside is soft rubber, they get everywhere in the mouth and you can rub teething gel on them if needed. You get two in the pack - 1 for when they have no teeth and 1 for after they have their front teeth.

I've also got an adult teething necklace which I wear and DD plays/chews as well when she's suffering. It cost about £10 online and looks like costume jewelry but the main bit is like soft rubber, she loves it.

Also Nelsons powders are fab. Natural and have an instant calming affect on my DD

The Tommee Tippee teethers are great, DS started teething at 3 months (not that any are through yet, at almost 7 months!) and his little mouth was too small for the other types, and he wasn't coordinated enough to get them in his mouth! You can put bonjela or whatever on them too, too stop them just licking your finger. Was recommended Sophie giraffe, but it freaks me out!
