Bedtime routine for a 9yr old, help please!

got out of a good routine for my 9yr old ds, he goes to bed about 8 but doesn't have a story read by me any more as he can read to himself. I now realise he's not reading but playing until late. He shares a room with his 6yr old brother who I put to bed at 7.30 after a story with no problems. Do you still read to your 9yr old and what time do you put them to bed?
Thanx x

I dont read to my 8 year old any more. She goes upstairs at the same time as ds (5), they do their teeth, get pj's on, etc and ds is in bed and lights off by 7.45pm (he gets a story). DD then gets to either play a bit with toys, read her book or play on her laptop until bedtime/lights off at 8.15pm.

We get all 3 ready for bed between 6.45 & 7, especially on bath nights. The younger 2 (5 & 21months) go to bed for 7 / 7.15 then the 8.5yr old gets to play / read until 8ish depending on how gd she has been! We do have to go and check on her at gone time she has been given or she would still be up at 10.00!

I think it's just checking on them as they are still young and don't realise how important sleep is (well my dd dosent!)

No do not read to my 8 year old as often can read himself know he sneaks his i pod touch or ds occasionally but just check in after 30 mins so and tell to go to sleep and remove all distractions old enough to know what you saying and do it

I have a 9 year old and am finding a similar problem. He is a great reader and I don't read to him anymore (shame!) Also have a younger DS 6 with whom we do reading most nights for about ten mins. They tend to bathe about seven, and then chill in front of the tv tbh till around eight. Then to bed and read themselves for around 15-20 mins. Both sleep well. Definitely no computer games at this time.

Thanx for the replies, when he went to bed last night I asked him to read for a while then checked lights out half an hour later. I'd love to read to him but he doesn't want me to any more! X
