Newborn snuffles

DS is now 8wo and is still really snuffly to the point where he will wake himself up and not be able to catch his breath. It is horrible :(

When do these ease? He is still too little for the products on the market which are designed to help - snufflebabe, olbas oil etc - although will admit to putting some snufflebabe on a muzzy and putting it round the handles of his moses baskets... doesn't seem to have had any effect however!

I'm wondering if we should get him checked over as don't remember DD having these issues but she's a summer baby and he's obvioulsy winter. Plus DD has started nursery and so it bringing all sorts of germs home so it might be he's just got a cold (although no snot, he does have a cough!)...

Thanks so much - it does worry me a lot as he is struggling to breath at times and it's making it quite tough for me to drop off at night!

It's mucus from the birth - takes ages to go. DS had this and it was awful hearing him snort and choke - used to be worse at about 4 in the morning. You CAN use those saline squirters - easily available in Boots. We found they helped quite a lot and it stopped waking him at about 12 weeks, though the snuffling when he fed didn't disappear till about 5m.

Thank you so much - that sounds about right so it's good to know he might stop being so disturbed in a couple of weeks.

I have some saline drops but have heard about those squirters so might have to get one of those as the drops are really hit and miss!

Yes, we found the drops impossible - even at a few weeks old they can wriggle enough to make it really hard to get a drop into their noses!

My DD was a bit like this when she was a few weeks old, I don't think she was struggling to breathe but was very very snuffly. She grew out of it at a couple of months old and is now 10 months and it's not a problem anymore. I remember using the saline drops and they did work - it used to be a problem giving her her bottle as she couldn't breathe through her nose so the saline drops helped clear it.
