Do 6/7 yr old boys have a development leap about now?

My DS is having a tough time. He's very emotional, having meltdowns over very small issues, being a bit unkind to his younger brother. Blowing stuff way out of proportion, 'my heart is breaking / I may as well just die...very dramatic but does calm down quickly enough.
School wise he is v.young in his year and having lots of socialising issues. Can't grasp some of the more complex games, finds it difficult to join in as he seems to want a 'best friend' and constantly thinks no one likes him or likes someone else better.
Is this a phase which anyone recognises?
It does feel like he is lacking the emotional maturity of some of his peers and that as he is young for his year and has no older siblings, he is struggling to understand / match the other boys

This sounds exactly like my DS he is 7 in July we have had lots of tears on school days about not having any friends. he keeps asking class members who is my friend etc. He has meltdowns, snatches toys from 2yr old brother etc. I dont think there is any concern they are just immature. What does annoy me though is we have had friends round for tea to help bonding but Ds goes absolutely bonkers showing off, so stopped that. He struggles academically esp reading i am sure he is dyslexic but will wait to see school will test at 7.6

Thanks cushion. Glad to know I'm not alone. My DS does the showing of thing too. It's like he can't help himself, and you just think 'NO! Chill out a bit, this will end badly!!!'
But then you realise he's 6, and a young six and sometimes I wish he could just be put back a year.
