Anyone got a Ds with long hair?.Have you had any obstacles to get over concerning his hair?
Ds has been told he has got to tie his hair back for gymnastics(not quite shoulder length),he is mortified "everyone will laugh at me".
Shame if it puts him off as he is v.good at it & has wanted to do it for a long time.

Round here, long hair on boys is a middle-class statement. It's a reaction against the little thugs with their skinheads and earrings at the age of 7.

Blu · 22/06/2007 16:52

UQD!
That's an outrageous conflation!

I do agree that in DS's school, by and large hair length is a class issue, but I don't think that short hair equals thuggery!

UnquietDad · 22/06/2007 16:53

I knew that would cause outrage...

katelyle · 22/06/2007 16:56

My ds has longish hair - but the minute he asks for it to be cut, I wll cut it. My nephew had lovely long hair and we all thought he liked it - because he said he did - but he told us all at Christmas that he hated it and it made him unhappy at school, but he felt he coulnd't tell us because we kept saying how nice it was, so he thought he must be wrong. He's now 25!

katelyle · 22/06/2007 16:58

And I'm afraid that one of the reasons that my ds's hair is long is exactly whya unquietdad says!

Curmudgeonlett · 22/06/2007 16:59

How on earth did I do that?

I have no idea how this thread appeared .. I was looking for ALoha today and it turned up

oops

filthymindedvixen · 22/06/2007 16:59

my dh has long hair (sort of shoulder length bit Bill N Ted IFKWIM) he ties it back for work etc. Plain black bands.
No. 1 son likes his hair long (it's very thick and straight, it's collar length, bit 'Madchester'. He would tie it back for games if it was longer. The other boys do. So what?

Here's a question. It's obviously ok for guys to wear hair in pony tail. But why not plaits? Or bunches? Men just don't Why not?

UnquietDad · 22/06/2007 17:00

Didn't Evan Dando once try bunches? It didn't catch on.

Jazzicatz · 22/06/2007 17:01

When visiting a prep school for ds most of the little darlings had longish foppish hair, must say they did look very handsome!!!

pointydog · 22/06/2007 17:09

UQ, must have been the same time Evan Dando was out his face on drugs

pointydog · 22/06/2007 17:10

The upper classes always have foppish hair. Part of the uniform.

OrmIrian · 22/06/2007 17:15

DS~1 is 10 and has blond hair just past his shoulders. He looks lovely and although I wanted him to get it cut when it was at the normal-cut-that-parents-can't-be-bothered-to-maintain stage, I think he looks wonderful now. Not long enough to need tying back yet - have to cross that bridge when we come to it.

DOn't like really short hair on boys.

Nanoon · 22/06/2007 21:39

my ds 2.9 has long blond hair and its lovely. People are always commenting on how nice it is. One woman said to me (thinking he was a girl) oh what lovely hair she has, when i said he was a boy she just said "oh dear, what a shame" .

I do think it has to be the right type of hair tho, long limp and fine doesn't look so good imo.

UnquietDad · 22/06/2007 21:44

pointy - I think it was, yes!!
Can't think of a man who has successfully experimented with plaits. Bob Flowerdew?... He has a single plait...

hellish · 22/06/2007 21:44

mmm evan dando -

snugglebumnappies · 22/06/2007 21:47

DS1 had lovely shoulder length ring;ets until he was about 3, I remember a checkout assistant saying "hasn't she got lovely hair". to which I replied "she is a boy" and the checkout assistant looked shocked and asked me "why didn't I cut it then?"........... because I don't want to??

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 22/06/2007 21:49

Zoe how on earth do you know he is the only boy in the class who gets "love letters" from the girls? (And "because of his hair"!)

I think most mums with boys from approx. 5- 10 who have long hair have it that way because they, the mums, like it!

Let them lok like boys for goodness ake, particuarly if they are asking to have it cut like Elmie's son!

If they want it long, then they can choose to have it that way when they're teenagers! It's fine then.. and for men.. it's their choice

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 22/06/2007 21:49

UQD - PDiddy?

UnquietDad · 22/06/2007 21:51

Da plaits iz phat.

oliveoil · 22/06/2007 21:51

I have snogged Evan Dando

this fact has nothing to do with long hair v short, just thought I would add my twopenneth

3littlefrogs · 22/06/2007 21:53

Just wait until the first nit invasion...out will come the clippers .

vixma · 22/06/2007 21:56

primary or secondary school?

MuminBrum · 22/06/2007 21:59

I think little boys look far handsomer with nice haircuts - you can see the shapes of their heads and their dear little napes. Far nicer than long straggly curls. And Pointydog, the upper classes have foppish hair because they are too mean to go to the barber more than once a year.

pointydog · 22/06/2007 22:00

farking hell! You have snogged evan dando, oilers?

pointydog · 22/06/2007 22:01

and he was conscious and everything, was he?
