my LO has been refered to SALT, she reguarly uses words and can say long sentences such as 'mummy want shoes and coat now' but she also uses alot of slurred speech so i cant understand what shes saying, esp when shes around people she doesnt know well. Some days everything she says is clear and other days i cant understand alot of what she says. If i ask her to say a word she repeats it clearly every time.

I just dont understand if she has a speech problem, or if this is normal for a 2 and a half year old, this has been going on for 6 months where i have had visits from the HV at the clinic unsure if there is a problem or not.

I'm just upset because i dont know whats going on, i have to wait another 3 months for the referal appt.

She sounds like my dd who is same age except my dd can't say that long a sentence just yet. She can say 3 or 4 word sentences but I'd say a third of what she says I struggle to understand. Dd used to have salt as she was slow to talk they though she had oral dyspraxia, then they signed her off as she suddenly within two days developed over 100 words. Her pronounication is poor though. I'll give her couple more months and see what happens unsure of milestones for 2 and half year old it gets a bit hazy at this age ??!! She can't say her own name but just yesterday started counting

My DS2 is 2.4. He uses lots of words and some sentences but is very unclear a lot of the time. I'm not worried about it... yet....

My ds is 2 1/2 and has his SALT app on the 29th feb.

We pretty much understand everything he says and it's a big improvement from the precisely 0 words he had 6 months ago, but he's not very clear to everyone else.

I actually suspect tongue tie which is preventing him from sounding words out properly but I keep being fobbed off so we'll see what SALT says.

As you've found out SALT waiting lists can be huge, so having your dd being referred now is a good thing if there is a problem and if not at least you'll know.

dd2 has slurred speech sometimes especially on certain words and longer sentences but she has low muscle tone which also affects her mouth muscles. She is mostly understandable now after a bit of speech therapy and is only really slurred if she's tired. She is 4 years old now and has come on a lot in the last year from where she was.
