needing advice. My ds has always been happy to go everywhere but in the last 3 weeks has had an absolute freak out about nursery. He has had a virus so has been off for a few days but seems to have got himself in such a state and is so stubborn that I don't know how to break the cycle. It is his preschool year and there is no obvious reason for him to be unhappy - usually so laid back. i am a teacher myself and I think that isn't helping 'cos I have got wound up about him behaving in this way - any tips???????

Fortunately I haven't had this problem with dd yet, but I thought this story might help:

When I was 5 I developed a similar sudden hatred of school. I can't remember why i hated it, but I can remember the tantrums! (mum says I was "infected" by the boy next door, who also hated school). My mum had a word with the teacher, who pulled me aside one day and asked why I didn't like school, and if there was anything that we didn't do that I would like to do etc. Now I can remember this very clearly! I don't think I was at all sure, but I said the problem was the lack of string painting. The next day, we did some string painting and I can remember being so chuffed at the idea that someone had listened to me that I liked school again.

So anyway yes - it's often simply a question of breaking the cycle, but it is probably best that it comes from someone at nursery rather than you. Does that help?
