DD(2.7) and NOISE! Aarrghh ... Please tell me it gets better?

My DD is 2.7 and generally is an outgoing confident little girl - very chatty and sociable, started preschool last week with not a backward glance etc etc, cheerfully waves "bye mummy see you later" etc.

But she gets VERY UPSET about any kind of noisy thing - hand dryers in loos, fans, hoovers, blenders, loud music, chainsaws, digger motors, motorbikes. She has potty trained brilliantly and never has an accident out and about, but oh the stress if someone is using a hand dryer in a public loo! She has a nervous breakdown, sobbing and wailing in terror until we leave.

This seems recently to have spread to the Wind, and Rain, and Storms! If its windy or rainy (we live in Cumbria and so it often is!) she pulls her hood up and staggers around gripping it around her head for dear life and wailing ...

Please someone reassure me she will get less sensitive about these sorts of things .... it seems to be getting worse rather than better (started with hand dryers when she was about 18 mths).

I should add that, while I am as deaf as a old post, DH had his hearing tested recently and was told his hearing at 42 is still as good as a teenagers - do you think she just has very acute hearing?

I don't know about the getting better bit yet but just wanted to reassure you are not alone - my dd (2.3) is exactly the same - we have just been into public toilets and she sobbed and sobbed at the dryer, runs away at the hoover, won't go near a hairdryer etc...... Would also be interested to hear if it improves...surely it must!?

DS (7) used to be like this. He is still easily distracted by noise, but isn't so scared of it now. He can go into a toilet without fear now :) I think he improved between 3 and 4.
