How long should my 8 week olds be awake during the day?

Hello Mumsnetters!
I'm a first time mum of 8 week old twin girls and I'm worried (maybe unnecessarily) about the amount of time they seem to sleep and what little time they seem to be awake. Other babies I know at this age seem to be showing interest in things and wanting to be awake but not my two. They show little interest in anything.
Also they don't seem to make eye contact just yet. They look all around but even when I am holding them right in front of me they don't look at me.
I'm really starting to worry that something might be wrong.
Xxx

I'd ask a health visitor if you're really concerned, but 8 weeks is very young still and babies need tons and tons of sleep, some lots more than others.

I have one who's always been chatty and made eye contact with anyone within range and another who's a bit dreamy and has been in her own little world a lot more from day 1 (and slept more too) - now at school, both are perfectly friendly, outgoing and normal. Try not to worry, enjoy your beautiful daughters!

I agree talk to your health visitor if you're worried (or GP, my HV was SO unhelpful and always said things like 'I dunno I'm not a doctor'!). But also agree that it is unlikely there's anything wrong. I know lots of babies who were still very much 'newborns' at 8 weeks but quickly started being more engaged by 12 weeks. Most importantly enjoy this sleepy stage while you can! From the age of two weeks my son never ever EVER wanted to go to sleep and would fight it like mad. I was SO envious of my friends whose babies would just snuggle up and fall asleep on them for long stretches.
