9 month old screaming at meal times

my normally sunny and cheery child has just started repeatedly screaming in temper during meal times when unhappy, until i remove her from the high chair or give her something she prefers, after which she is fine. she has been picky with food from day one, but i have never forced it, and previously stopped mealtimes when she became tired or irritable. we have used baby led weaning and she currently eats a fair range of things, although its hit and miss in terms of volume. i also breastfeed mornings and evenings. she does scream a bit during other things like getting into the buggy, but not like at meal times. i feel like she's suddenly testing me for my response, and is never upset to the point of crying. i really hope this isnt the start of tantrums - eek! it's all new to me - any tips or things to avoid from the start? i want to avoid getting into bad habits, but not unduly harsh on someone still so tiny. all advice very welcome indeed!

Oh lordy I have been there. We have many sets of earplugs around the place as he screamed so much. We had him checked out to rule out pain and it seemed he just liked screaming! 18 months now and he hasn't done it in ages btw.

Try not to look horrified and just carry on brightly as normal. It should get better as she can communicate so think about signing maybe. Maybe she wants more or something else or a drink or to finish, who knows. Do lots of pointing in case that helps her express herself too.

Best bit was when you are around other parents whose children don't scream...
