Cutting nails

Hi,
Has anyone disovered a relatively quick and easy way of cutting their little one's finger and toe nails. My DD thinks its the worst thing in the world and I dread doing it. She is 16 months now and quite strong and very wriggly.

i do my boys in the bath when the nails are soft and they can be easily distracted!

Yes - tell dh it's his job!! It's the only thing I won't do...I've embraced everything else, including going well beyond the call of duty when DS2 had serious constipation - but I can't do nail-cutting. It sets my teeth on edge. I remember my mum always cut them a smidgin too short so they stung for days.

The only thing I've heard is that people wait until the baby is asleep. She's a bit old for you to bite them, isn't she...I used to do that. I saw a woman sitting on the floor in the middle of Boots cutting her daughter's nails the other day...she said "it's the first time she's fallen asleep since yesterday lunchtime"!!!!

what worked for DD was that i promised to varnish her nails with some of her pink kids nail varnish. she liked it having them cut from then on.

A good distraction like CBeebies works for DS (18m), also This Little Piggy.

Well, I get DH to do it while I breastfeed her - but this might not apply in your case. I can't do it when she is asleep, she wakes up. TV doesn't work as she has no interest as yet. So I sympathise! Have you tried filing them?

you could file them

when im cutting my dd2's nails (shes 15 mths) i sit her on my knee facing away from me and give her a multitude of toys

some people say give them something they are not usually allowed to touch, like your necklace or a favourite ornament or something

I used to wait until my ds was aleep but recently have tried when he has been awake, after bathtime. The other night I managed to do one hand and as he kept on insisting that I do the other hand tomorrow! So the next night, I tried doing the other hand and he let me!

Slowly but surely.

when dd was little i did it when she was asleep but as shes got older she wakes up now its after bath when her nails are soft with a remote control in her hand, buttons are such wonderful things!!!
