help me stop DS 18mo hair-pulling - need ideas for new comforter

Since I stopped breastfeeding DS 18mo three months ago, he has become more and more attached to pulling my and DH's hair when he needs comfort or to help him to go to sleep. It's beginning to drive us nuts, especially when he does it for hours in the middle of the night. He's also started to do it to nursery staff and other children as a sign of affection. Naturally no-one else sees it that way, and we need to help him to stop.

Can anyone suggest a viable replacement comforter that we can try? Something that feels like human hair, but isn't so long it could choke him (like a silk scarf) or worse, actual human hair (e.g. a wig; we don't want him to develop a paraphilia!) My Dad suggested a strip of kangaroo fur, which sounded plausible, but it's hard to get in the UK.

I think you just need to tie your hair back and repeatedly remove his hand...not replace the comforter with hair-like stuff. Perhps you could give him a bear with very fluffy fur. Tell DH to remove his hand every tme he does it...yes he might yell...but he'll be 2 soon and should be able to understand a no go area by now.
