...having a stab at writing their name - writing over dotted lines or whatever?

dd was writing her name at about 2.10 I think

DD starting to try, she's 2, she can draw shapes and lines.

Dinosaur · 16/01/2006 09:49

Not until 5 (DS1) and 4 (DS2).

DD is 3.1 and is showing no interest whatsoever!! I think anything before 3 is quite early tbh. DH is a primary teacher and he has 7 yr olds who cannot write their names properly yet so i am not unduly concerned at this point!

Hulababy · 16/01/2006 09:51

DD wrote her name for the first time in her Mother's Day card, a month or two before her 3rd birthday.

edodgy · 16/01/2006 09:51

My dd is 2.8 and can write her name but her name is Eve so it's not hard if they have a longer name im sure it would take longer.

Thanks - I was sure that DD1 had started doing this type of thing whilst she was 2. DD2, although she recognises her name and can hold pens for colouring etc., has absolutely no idea nor inclination to write her name.

DS1 at around 3 at nursery; DS2 not until 3.5. Neither has good pencil skills/fine motor control.

At 4 - when they wanted him to do it at school. They had to write their names on their drawings, colourings, worksheets, etc. Wasn't difficult at all. I guess he could have done it earlier, but wasn't too bothered - it's only when it became part of the routine at school that he started. Once (at four and a half) he got lost in a big shop and wrote his name down for the shop assistent who then announced it. Was very relieved to have found him and proud that he could write his name!

Bob has a signature already, but it's just 3 straight vertical lines from left to right on the page. He spells his name as he says it. He's 3 next month.
