Year old DS smiles and giggles and laughs when we play with him but doesn't really smile on demand for strangers or friends - normal?

Just curious how easily your baby smiles for others?...DS gets excited when his child carer arrives, he smiles a lot at her and daddy or me when we come back or see him - but amongst friends and others it takes him a while. He's quite serious, and spends a lot of time looking around, taking it in. Wondered whether other babies smiled on tap in big groups for others etc?

My DD was not a smiler for strangers. She would eye them up and maybe after she'd got used to people would smile. Even as a toddler she was the same, she 4 now and is much friendlier.

Completely normal and developmentally appropriate.

Yes, absolutely normal!

Compleatly normal. Ds had to be around someone for a while before he treated them to a smile!
He's much better now at 4. Complete attention seeker! Grin

DD is 19 months and smiles from her are hard-won as a general rule. She waves and says 'bye' quite readily tho... Hmm
