Someone made a throwaway comment over Christmas that my son (5) my have attention deficit disorder. This has obviously caused me some concern.
He is a dreamer, and does not really seem to know or care what is going on around him. He is able to concentrate when reading his school books (although does not sit on his bum all that time!), or if he is doing anthing else he enjoys. i.e lego.
I have never thought that he was unusual to anyone else. He does love "playing" football with his friends, but the games literally pass him by while he is busy being luke skywalker somewhere on the pitch!
Should I be concerned, or is it just the way he is?
What things should I look out for?
I have looked at stuff online, and he is definately not a hyperactive impulsive child, he is a really calm little boy who is well behaved, is it just that he has his head in the clouds?

Hello, I don't have any experience, I am afraid, but it might be worth posting in Special Needs: Children.

I suppose it depends who "someone" was. If a person with a relevant professional background then maybe look into it further. If not, I wouldnt worry. One of my relatives loves to pathologise about my DSs behaviour... but then she's never had small boys, and I dont think knows what is normal. I would rely on the school to raise any major concerns (as long as you have none yourself), they will be used to different personalities, and I would hope would be able to distinguish between this and possible ADD.

I'm not an expert at all, but this doesn't sound like ADD to me. I think he's just a bit of a daydreamer!
