9 month old not putting anything in mouth

This may seem a bit of an odd thread, but it is something that has been worrying me slightly for a while!

DS2 is 9mo in a week. He is the most laidback baby you could ever wish to meet (according to us & everyone who meets him)! He sleeps 11-12 hours at night, has 2 naps most days, is on 75th centile for weight (last weighed about a month ago) & only cries when his teeth are bothering him or until he gets hungry (but he can 'last' very well for food, eg doesn't moan even if he doesn't have breakfast until gone 9 - a rare occurence, though).

However, a couple of things seem strange to me & I don't know whether to be concerned.

  1. He never puts anything in his mouth - finger food, beaker, toys - nothing. He plays with & explores his toys by looking at them, shaking them, bashing them on the nearest surface, pressing buttons etc. Big bro (3) is also keen to show him how things work! I would love for him to at least accept some kind of finger food by now, but he just takes it & does the same things with it that he does with his toys Confused

  2. He will not drink any more than 1 or 2 sips of water or very diluted apple juice, whether I offer him the cup or he holds it himself. He has 20oz formula per day, in accordance with guidleines. MIL, (whom I love)when we stayed with them over Xmas, kept saying every 2 mins [exaggeration] how thirsty he must be but he will not take any drink but formula Hmm

Any ideas please? Hopefully am worrying over nothing. BTW, he seems to be teething quite badly at the moment, very lumpy gums but only 1st tooth surfaced a few weeks ago. This has put him off his food a little, but he will always happily scoff a yogurt (cold & smooth on gums).

TIA!

Forgot to mention - he has recently gone off my homemade food (anything from whizzed up roast dinners to Annabel Karmel recipes) & will only eat jars, but I have not really persevered with this over Christmas as we have been very busy & visiting relatives.

Also, he sucks his thumb when tired or upset & will chew on his hands when teething, to the extent that sometimes he makes himself sick (although this is rarely).

Sorry to dripfeed, I had forgotten these things!

Have you mentioned it to your health visitor or gp? I know a boy who didn't put anything in his mouth and turned out he had huge tonsils and had to get them removed. Sorry, not trying to worry you but perhaps it would be sensible to check its nothing physical.

My ds didn't eat much til he was well past one and then just got it one day without me doing anything different. He really suffers with teething and I think that put him off solids too.
