1-2 night feeds at 8months is perfectly normal. I think sleeping through the night is a developmental stage like walking or talking, he'll do it when he's ready.

There's no harm in gently encouraging it though. Maybe slowly cut down the amount he has in his bottles at night.

My ds2 has just started sleeping through the night at 15 months old. Previously he was waking every 2/3 hours. I just fed him when he wanted and then one night he didn't wake up until 8am.

This didn't happen for me until DD was 20 months, I was bfing and she still woke at 3am for a feed, then one day just slept through. At 8 months 1-2 night feeds is good, I was still doing every 3 hours through the night at that stage.

Have you tried a dream feed at say 11/12pm to see if it will carry him through until 6am? Then you might get a 6 hour stretch at least.

sounds normal. ds didn't sleep through until all his teeth were through at 18mo. sounds like you are on bottles - can you get your dh to take it in turns with the night feeds so that you get a good sleep every other night?

Thankyou for your advice all my friends children sleep through and have done for months so that why i askd thought it was something im doing wrong, he wakes up around 12/1 for a bottle anyway then again around 6 half 6 then i put him back to sleep until 8ish. Which i suppose isnt too bad, i go to bed around 11pm. I might try and cutdown the milk intake hes having thanks

Perfectly normal, and to be expected. If all your friends babies are sleeping through and have been for months then they have some extremely unusual babies!

Maybe introduce a 3rd meal at lunchtime?
DD is only 28 weeks but has weaned really quickly. She is still up between 1 & 3 times, though not always for milk. Not in itself a problem. The issue we have is she's filling up in the evening after snacking during the day. Sometimes taking 14 oz between 6.30 & 9pm. Fine if it wasn't taking that entire time (in a darkened room) to get it down her.

We're on 3 meals now and about to introduce some protein (fish then chicken) to teatime in the hope it'll make her go longer. We also started to give a pudding which atm is at lunch and only a few spoons of fruit puree or yoghurt.

This too shall pass.

My DS was born in may so nearly 8 months old an still wakes at night. Currently he has 3 meals and 2 snacks a day and bottles at 3,10,2,6,11! All 6oz

Have you tried stopping milk for water? . I got my prem baby to sleep through at 3 months . I will explain if you are interested..?

bishboschone · 31/12/2011 16:53

Prem is relevant because he was small and only took smallish feeds .

Flisspaps · 31/12/2011 16:55

Technically he is sleeping through then (5 hours is classed as sleeping through)

DD didn't do a full 12 hour stretch regularly until about 14mo.

To be honest, if he's waking up at 6/6.30am after waking at midnight then that's not bad.

Flisspaps · 31/12/2011 16:56

I would add, at 8mo his main source of nutrition should be milk anyway, so if he's not taking huge amounts at each feed, then I wouldn't look at reducing milk feeds until he's ready to drop them.

bishboschone · 31/12/2011 17:08

That should be swopping, obv on,y in the night .
