Help! 10 month old keep spitting out drinks!

My 10 months old have been spitting out his drinks whenever it is offered to him. He will take a mouth full and spit it out and we are not sure whether it's because he finds it funny, or that he doesn't know how to swallow properly. We tried all different containers such as cups and bottles and straw etc and he does the same regardless of what media we offer the drinks in. The only time he doesn't spit out his drink is when he's bresatfed.

I am keen to start weaning him off breastfeeding slowly, but if he's not taking any liquid I will still have to breastfeed him to make sure he drinks enough.

He's taking his solids well and generally loves his food.

Watching with interest as my 8mo is the same! I keep wondering when she'll get the hang of it. And if we leave her to her own devices with a sippy cup, she bangs it on the high chair tray, chews the bottom of it while tipping water all over herself, takes a mouthful then shoots it out, splashes her hands in the water that's gone on the high chair...

DS did this until he was over 12m, sorry...

He's 16m now and has sort of stopped, but if he gets bored at the table he will start again.

He must be swallowing some, so I think its just all part of learning-about-liquids (or so I tell myself when changing his sodden clothes after a meal!)

Thanks for the responses. It's good to know that DS is not the only one. I guess I'll have to keep trying until he 'got it' one day.

Has anyone try with an open cup? Does that help?

My 11mo DD does the same, although not all the time anymore so she is slowly learning.

Have you tried a doidy cup as I know quite a lot of people on mn swear by these!

Thanks. I have heard some good things about them too. I should definitely give it a try!

Hey, my 8 month old does the exact same. How did you get on? Would love some advice, my lil boy is breastfed only and will not take anything else.
Thanks in advance!

How have you gotten on, I have the same problem?

BigDad88 · 11/08/2024 06:27

My son started doing this recently at 10 months, he is almost 11 months and has been doing it for weeks.

Previously for the past 4-5 months since being introduced to water he has not doing this until recently, I figure he is just playing since it is something he has started recently?

Anyone experience this after drinking fine for months? He does this with apple juice too but never milk (mixed feeding)

Thanks
