3 mth old poking eyes

My DS is 3 mths old and in the last week or so has really started to use hands and scratch his face and head. He also tends to claw around his eyes and it looks like he pokes his eyeball and really sticks them in. He does this when tired or irritable and tends to do it when falling asleep or waking up. It's quite scary at times. I can get my head around the scratches etc but am worried he is going to do damage to his eyes. Keeping his nails short and hands clean and away from his face has become a full time job.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a phase? I am going to see how mittens before bed works ( don't think he will like them) and am not sure what else I can do.

they do learn to avoid eyes but at this age it is random flailing

if you've not gone and bought mittens save your dough and use baby socks, pulled up over the elbow

My DD is 5 months and still does this. Poking at her eyes wakes her up and so I'm still swaddling her in the hopes that she eventually grows out of it.
