6 week old really grumpy between 6 pm and 1 am - why?

My 6 week old DD cries constantly between these times - an angry cry, and sometimes goes red in the face and acts like she's in pain

I know she's not hungry (she's just had a 5 ounce bottle of EBM) - I know she doesn't need winding (have burped her)

The only time she stops crying is momentarily to suck on a dummy, or if I hold her and rock her back and forth

Any help? She does this every night

think it's pretty normal for babies of this age to be grotty of an evening, I'm afraid. Think that's what they mean by colic - I always thought it was bad wind!!!

she sounds like quite a cuddly baby - could you maybe have her in a sling for an hour or two of an evening while you cook/eat/watch telly

my DD was also a nightmare... every 2h for months.
Could be colic.
Does she have a cold by any chance? My dd would not lie flat without going ballistic if she was even in the slightest way congested.
Also dd hated lying on her back... so I did the big nono and put her on her front... helped a little.
Or maybe she's just annoyed because she's supposed to sleep? My dd (now 4)would be a night owl if I let her!

Oooh, mine did this . We did the Dr Harvey Karp thing - swaddle, shush, lie on stomach and shoogle (or something like that!). There's a book by him - baby bliss, it was a lifesaver at the time esp the swaddling. It's awful but passes - dd 10 months old now & I can hardly remember what it was like back then.

my 4 week old generally has rough evenings. just fed her, but she only wnated a snack off one boob.

she also wants held and rocked, but she's in her swing just now okay.

you are NOT alone. i have ill 2.5 year old just now as well and it's hell b/c evenings are when dd1 is worst as well.

DD (Kate) is 6 weeks and is also an evening snacker - thank goodness DS (20 months) goes to bed at 7!!

All four of mine did this, ime it's just normal new baby behaviour. We wore holes in the carpet with all the floorwalking we did! Thankfully it comes to an end eventually.

she's called roisin, and she's feeding just now. she napped for two hours, which means she's gonna get grumpy here after this feed.

Roisin is BEAUTIFUL name!! - This behaviour is normal - my DD1 used to scream herself sick between 5pm and 12am every single night til she was about 3 months - You are not alone by any means - Just keep going, you WILL get through it - It just seems like hell at the time - Totally endorse the swaddling thing - have swaddled both of my DD's and has worked a dream - then they both slept on their fronts from 6 months. Thinking of you!!

Oh no you've just reminded me what little babies are like!! Come April we'll be employing the driving to Tesco and late night shopping with Daddy strategy - works a treat!

Because they often are. They call it colic, but colic just means that they cry in the evening. Some people think it is caused by digestive pain due to a transient lactose intolerance, though that is by no means proven. It does stop though - usually before 12 weeks. Ds did it, and it's awful and horrible, but it does stop.
