Napping a nightmare now that he sleeps on the floor

Hi all, really at my wits end and could really use some advice. I have a 16 month old boy who's at nursery 4 days a week. A few months ago, he moved over to the bigger group where they nap on the floor next to each other on mattresses and not in cots - since then, his napping at home has been a nightmare! He now as good as refuses to sleep in his cot at home at all during the day and if I do controlled crying, this will go on for over half an hour and then he'll only sleep for 40 minutes (normally 1 and a half/2 hours lunchtime nap) and then be exhausted and hysterical afterwards. I've tried to replicate exactly what happens at nursery and on Saturday put my yoga mat on the floor in the lounge, but when he saw it he started crying and running off (no problems napping at nursery, doesn't get upset about it), ended up with him falling asleep on me and then I edged out so he slept on the sofa for 2 hours, tried it again and refuses to sleep on floor but only on me (I have no problems with him at night, literally put him down awake and he falls asleep, no fuss!.). I'm so confused, I'm not sure why it's bothering him but it obviously is and I don't get how he can be so upset during the day and then just fall asleep at nighttime, I also just don't know whether to carry on with him falling asleep on me and then moving him to the sofa or to try him in the cot again, although I've tried this every weekend for almost 2 months and it's got very stressful for all of us! Any advice would be great, I'm stumped! PS - he has no problems falling asleep for nap if in pram or the car! xx
