1 yr old grinding teeth - is this normal?

Hi everyone

My 1 year old DD has suddenly started clicking and grinding her teeth together; she's only got 4 (2 top, 2 bottom) and 2 coming either side of the front top teeth. I think its because she likes the sound they make when she does it, but I'm worried they'll start wearing away, she does it so much!
Both me and DH often find ourselves grinding our teeth and clenching jaws (probably through stress and anxiety mainly) so I don't want her to start at such asn early age. Am I worrying over nothing? All replies gratefully received!

Ds does this too. He's 10 months and has 8 teeth. Doesn't do it all the time, just now and then, some days more than others. Doesn't seem to be any particular pattern, not when he's upset or in a strange place, so my guess is they do it because they can! Its just another new trick they've learnt, like hand clapping and they may like the noise or the way it feels.
I don't know if its something to be concerned about. Will mention it to hv next time I see her.

I think it is something a lot of kids do when they realise they have teeth. The time to worry is when they do it in their sleep. I grind my teeth in my sleep, my ds1 does it (he is seven), my Mum does it - as did her Mum. My dentist says is can be passed down through familys.
I wouldn't worry if they are just doing it during the day, like you say they just like the sound it makes.

It's a hideous noise, isn't it? Completely normal though, from all I've read and IME. My ds certainly did it and stopped when the novelty wore off.

Mine does this too. Horrible isnt it. (she was one a couple of weeks ago and has about 5 or 6 teeth)

normal normal normal... my three year old does it in rythym with thomas the tank engine's theme choon. never met an adult who does it tho' so I assume it wears off...

My just one year old does this as well. I almost have to put him out in the yard as it makes me feel sick - its totally grinding. My eldest did it as well..........

Thanks for all your messages - I feel a lot better knowing other kids do it too. She has temprarily stopped grinding this week as she has a cold and cough and would rather rub snot all over her face, but hey its a step in the right direction
