speech therapy: what happens?

dd3.10 has probs with pronounciation..huge vocab but can't seem to say words with r's in very well!! she is also v shy so it is not really being picked up at pre-school. what do i do to see a speech therapist..dloc's referal? and how do the sessions work/help, esp with a shy child??

I went to a children's centre where they had monthly drop-in SALT sessions and got ds referred through that.
the SALT he (eventually) saw was fantastic and in the space of a few months his speech improved beyond recognition.
I am sure they have experience in all manner of children, shy and otherwise so I wouldn't worry about that - I would be more concerned with getting her assessed asap and on the waiting list.
