ds 3.9 suddenly excessively moody, sullen, rude

ds1 is 3.9, and while he's not usually all sweetness and light, we had a nice balance between mostly nice and occasional outburst. the last week he's suddenly become the grumpiest child in the world. he's having mood swings like he hasn't slept all week, but seems to be sleeping fine. he's been complaining about random pains in his knees (growing pains?) and is suddenly dry at night, but has had a couple of accidents in the day (unusual). other than that, nothing has changed that we can think of.

it's such a sudden and complete change, our super independent boy asking for help with getting dressed then stropping because he didn't want that kind of help. do happy children just go to bed and wake up miserable?

Mine do when they are coming down with something. For example before chicken pox, a bad cold, an ear infection. If my ds has an accident in the day I now worry he is getting ill cos that seems to be a sign of an impending virus too.

uh oh. ok, we'll look out for the impending illness.

but, can it really take be whole week of pre viral grumps?

I have had them grumpy like that for that long before. And he has been having some pains - perhaps has just got a strange virus. Or the other option is he's just testing you! Mine do that too.

Sounds like my son at that age and it turned out to be a MASSIVE growth spurt.

MamaChocoholic · 11/11/2011 13:45

another one? Shock possible as he is in a better mood today, and I noticed this morning that his pjs (size 4-5) are looking small. and we thought his winter clothes were all sorted...

I know, just when you think they can't grow any more. My ds is 4.1 and he looks like a large 6 year old. Your ds could be having a hormone surge, as I was told mine was and the good thing is.....it will pass....!
