6 and a half months and not sitting up!

My DD will be 7 months in a couple of weeks and she can't yet sit up without support and she also hasn't properly rolled over, just onto her side not onto her tummy. Should I be worried? She is sleeping through the night :) eating 3 meals a day and doing other normal things like babbling smiling and laughing.

No, short answer is nothing to worry about. Grin Wink

nearlytherenow · 03/11/2011 19:32

DS2 is a similar age and isn't sitting up either, but I'm sure it's fine. Nor is he even close to sleeping through the night (frankly just sleeping at some point during the night is the most I can hope for), so your DD wins on that front Smile. My DS1 was sitting with no support by 5 months, but was then REALLY slow to crawl / walk - I'm not sure sitting is an indicator of much.

MamaChocoholic · 03/11/2011 19:37

don't worry. dts didn't sit without support till sometime after 7 months. but when they got it, it only took a day or two to master. dt1 was walking at 11mo, dt2 at 12mo, so it hasn't held them back at all! they haven't learnt to sleep through the night yet though Envy

each baby goes at their own pace and development happens in leaps not smooth little steps. if she's developing in other areas, then don't fret.

Don't worry. It's one of those things where all the babies around you are doing it and you think your child is developmentally delayed when actually they are NORMAL. It's NORMAL to sit up at anything up to 9 months I believe.

fannybaws · 03/11/2011 19:55

My 10 month old has just learned to sit up unsupported, HTH Smile

PinterestQueen · 03/11/2011 20:48

DD was 10 months too, no one was concerned as she demonstrated very good fine motor skills. She didn't walk until nearly 20 months either. She made up for it (and still does at 2.8) with talking!

DS was nearly the opposite and did everything physically slightly earlier than average but was very slow to talk and has only really now at four caught up.

They are all so different.

LorainneK · 03/11/2011 21:46

Thank you so much to everyone I am not worried anymore!! It does seem as if everyones babies are doing everything earlier but they all develop at different rates. :o

My now 17 month old never really sat unsupported until after he had started crawling (at about 7 or 8 months) and he was able to get from crawling to sitting to crawling himself. He also never rolled until about this point as well. He walked at 14 months which is average. he's still not a baby that really sits,he's more a walking around kind of guy!!

dreamfeeder · 04/11/2011 22:11

no, you'd hope for 90 seconds sitting by 9 months for the vast majority of babies. 6.5 months is nothing!!! She'll get it, and probably tomorrow now you've posted this Smile

My DD didn't roll, I never bothered til I thought 'oh rubbish, HV check next week' when she was 8 or 9 months. We did some practice and she cracked it by her check (one direction anyway!). She was sitting and walking holding hands then.... But rolling- she's always been totally unbothered by the need to try, and she never crawled- went straight to walking at 10.5 months, and when she did sit, she'd thrown herself back if put in the position for weeks, then the day after she was 6 months, sat for 90 sec- no build up. They do their own thing!!!

BertieBotts · 04/11/2011 22:11

DS was 9 months. He crawled first. He still won't sit still!

tigerlillyd02 · 04/11/2011 22:18

It's fine. My DS first sat unaided at 7 months (I too thought it was late then) but then took his first steps at 9 and a half....

DW123 · 05/11/2011 21:46

My twins are nearly 7 months - and they aren't rolling or sitting yet (well one of them has rolled onto his front three times and screamed each time, and the other one tries to roll onto his back every time I remember tummy time). Naturally they are the only babies I know who aren't sitting or rolling but I'm not stressing about it yet. I'm sure they are doing stuff other people fib about!

Karoleann · 06/11/2011 08:17

DC3 is 6.5 months and not sitting up properly or really rolling. Neither of the other two children did either. DS1 walked at 12 months and DS2 at 13 months. I actually don't think its late. I would only worry if they're not doing it by 8 months.

dlady · 06/11/2011 09:42

Both my girls didn't sit without being wobbly until just before 9mths. Then they crawled almost immediately and dd1 was walking properly by 11mths and dd2 by just before 11mths. So like others have said, nothing to worry about. I honestly can't remember about rolling, my girls are 10 & 13.

fraktious · 06/11/2011 09:54

Our paed seemed to think DS was a freak for being able to sit unsupported for a while at the 6 month check so I really don't think sitting was expected and therefore wouldn't worry if your 6.5mo can't!

Gigondas · 06/11/2011 10:05

Dd was about 9 months when did it (and that was cos I went back to work so nanny went on a Mission to make her). She was pretty lazylate about all the other physical milestones but was quite alert, happy and certainly normal on all other development points. So I wouldn't worry.

pigsinmud · 06/11/2011 10:09

My ds2 (now 11!) didn't sit unsupported until 8 months and didn't crawl until his first birthday. To make up for it he started talking ridiculously early and wouldn't stop! Don't worry.

mahaliha · 06/11/2011 13:24

My DD2 has just turned 7 months and has only really started sitting a couple of days ago (still very wobbly though). She has also never rolled from back to front, although I'm sure she could if she wanted to, but she hates being on her tummy. One thing I've learnt from all 3 of my DC is that they won't do something until they're interested and then they suddenly pick up a new skill overnight!

mycatsaysach · 06/11/2011 13:27

dd crawled before she could sit - don't worry

dogindisguise · 06/11/2011 17:04

My DS didn't sit unaided until he was about eight months old. I think anything up to nine months is normal.
