5 year old son wants to wear nappies again!

help! he is obsessed with wearing nappies after wearing pants for 2 + years! he gets physically excited when he wears one,likes to wee in it,goes very quiet into the bathroom or bedroom and spends a lot of time alone with it. It started some time after he went in to pants and i thought it was just a phase as the transition was so quick(no potty involved,straight from nappies to toilet and immediately dry at night)which was not forced incidentally,he was gently encouraged showing him his new pants every so often and asking if he wants to try them etc.......then he forgot all about wanting nappies again for a while and now he's worse than ever,am really worried that it will be with him like a fetish for life! i dont think anything is worrying him and he gets lots of affection....what should i do?

Take the nappies away then.

Unless you have a younger DC still in nappies why do you even still have them in the house?

i tried this,he asks me constantly for them,now started asking his grandmother- i have calmly refused for at least a year explaining this is not healthy for his "winky" and might make it sore,then i have tried a firmer approach stating "you are a big boy now and nappies are only for babies so don't ask me again as the answer will always be no" -the reason he started again is because he found an unused one hidden in a drawer which i overlooked-last night i caught him pinching a neighbours boys' nappy and hiding it in a carrier bag!

i agree but what i worry about is if i repress him in this way,will i cause him to become weird in another way later in life? you hear stories of repressed children and how they can turn out---i have read up on this but only through google and it seems fairly common in boys but more are older boys nearing teenage years-he has one older sister only,no younger siblings,no rivalry for attention etc. some opinions are to "let him be who he is" but i am not comfortable with providing nappies for this strange need/obsession, some suggest need to be babied again but this child has had more than his fair share of affection and still does!

Does he want to be 'babied' in any other ways?
My 4 yr old still wants to use the baby spoon we have knocking about whenever she can and my older DSD was the same with 'baby' cutlery until she was 8 or 9.

no he is shy about the nappy thing but he does love to be cuddled and cradled like a baby sometimes-i am not too worried about the cuddles,am sure this is quite normal for most young children

we have decided to just stand firm again and hope that he forgets about them in time,not to give him any attention over it and pray that he becomes a normal healthy adult

My 13 year old son still wears nappies. It's not a bad thing. Just let him be, it's not like he is harming anyone.

Supermum but if your son wears them because he NEEDS them then that is different completely to this situation the OP is in.

Her son does not need them. It sounds unhealthy.
