Newborn hearing test - second fail

DS has just failed his retest in his left ear. Right ear is ok. Now waiting for specialist HV to do more detailed testing (quoting patronising HV, "Don't worry the probes don't look like something from a horror movie") ...
Wondered if anyone had experience of this, and whether the basic test often produced false negatives, or whether it is usually accurate?
Just want to try to be realistic about things and prepared for any eventual outcome.

i was under the impression that it can be quite hard to get a reading on the newborn one simply cos movement/noise in the room can make it hard to test.
But no direct experience of this I'm afraid.

I think my dd had 3 tests, including the last one where they visited us at home with the said probes out of a horror movie! They tested her about 3 times during this house visit too. I knew she was fine though as she'd stopped feeding when a faint sounding fire engine went past a road near where we live. They seemed to test the left then the right ear each time and she'd just had enough messing about each time it came to the right ear. Suprisingly it took me to point this out and once she took a break, then tested the right ear first, the result was fine.
Then she told me it was quite common to have difficulty getting correct test results for newborns.
Dont worry, Im sure youre DS will be fine.

DD2 failed all of the home ones (3) and was eventually referred to the local centre for children with very specific needs. She had a fourth hearing test there, we were told it could take up to an hour before the result was in. She passed within about 20 mins. Don't worry too much. DD2 was just very gunky when she was born and that affected the results as she had fluid build up in her ears.

My son failed first two and then we had to wait a month to go to a specialist centre. The person who took the test the second time wasnt particularly reassuring so I remember doing some research and I think it can be difficult to get the correct result done in little ones. I also think if there was something seriously wrong you might have picked that up in the way your ds was reacting etc.

yep, my DS also failed the first 2 hearing tests. he eventually passed the test where they put little headphones over their ears that stick to their heads. whilst i did initially worry, i was told by the assessor that it's perfectly normal for babies born in the pool (was yours a water birth?) as the fluid rushes into their ears and the little hairs (the movement of which they use to check the hearing) are temporarily flattened.

i'm sure all will be fine!
