DD goes crazy when I take her to have her feet measured...

...Today's episode wasn't great. DD wouldn't let the lady in Clarks come anywhere near her to measure her feet. In the end we gave up. I'll leave it a few days go back, maybe just walk around the shop for a while and see what happens. She is 21 months and has never had any bad experiences in Clarks. She's always cried and been generally uncooperative when having her feet measured, despite being a very happy little girl otherwise. Any tip on how to solve this one?

Do you need shoes? Take her with you to buy a pair of shoes for yourself and make a big show of measuring your feet.
Or play measuring your feet and her feet and daddy's feet etc at home.
There's a good peppa pig episode also where peppa gets new shoes. Very popular in this household. Then we took DD to buy a pair "just like Peppa's".
Or bribery/ distraction. Produce a bag of chocolate buttons at the vital moment.

Ah, I'd love some new shoes... afraid DD has the entire new shoes budget though! The Peppa Pig idea is a great one - she adores Peppa. I'll see if I can find it on DVD. And I really should have gone with a stash of 'chocca buttons' as DD calls them! I did produce an oaty bar at one point but I think things had gone to far by then. Thanks for your suggestions.

DS was the same - solved itself somewhere between 2 and 2.5. Same with haircuts. Nightmare. One day he decided both were fine and not worth fussing over. Some kids are less placid than others I guess!

wompoopigeon · 03/10/2011 21:34

Oh glad some ideas were of help. I think the Peppa Pig episode is called 'New Shoes'. Peppa loves her new red shoes so much she wears them to bed!

Iggly · 03/10/2011 21:35

Silly question but what time do you take her? Is she near a nap or hungry?

BeeBopBunny · 03/10/2011 21:42

It was 9.30am. She has her nap at 10.30am so maybe she was getting tired. Trouble is, if I take her after her nap it's usually busy and at our store you end up waiting for ages and that just makes it worse. I've just ordered the Peppa Pig DVD - at £2.99 and free delivery it'll be a bargain if it works!

Thinking about it, she is generally not too keen on people invading her personal space unless she can see some point to it - she wouldn't let anyone hold her hand for ages until she figured it would help her to walk. Now she's fine with that. It's the same with haircuts too allnewtaketwo - she doesn't go completely crazy with haircuts, but she makes it a devil of a job to do.

park outside an independent shoe shop when she's asleep and they will come out and measure whilst she is sleeping. Not a perfect science but it was worth it for me.

Iggly · 04/10/2011 07:13

Can you go earlier? When they first open? Or on a day when not so busy?

BeeBopBunny · 04/10/2011 09:11

The shop opens at 9.30. And DD doesn't sleep in the pushchair/car. Good suggestions though, thanks!

you can buy a measuring gauge from startrite, maybe get one so you can get her used to it at home?

peppa pig episode.
MigGril · 04/10/2011 12:56

DD was like this when little, She just have very tickly feet I think. We got a startite foot measure so I could do it at home and didn't have to go to the shop so offten.

she did grow out of it and now love's having new shoes.

belindarose · 04/10/2011 17:40

Mine was just like this. However, we've just got the most recent pair at 24 months and she had no problems at all. In fact, she wondered loudly why another little girl was crying in the shoe shop. Maybe us just something they grow out of?

BeeBopBunny · 04/10/2011 19:16

I hope so belindarose. Funny creatures, aren't they?!

Oh my, I had to check your user name to see if it was me as I almost wrote this exact same thread about 10 days ago. Had the most awful tantrum to deal with and the chocolate buttons Id so thoughtfully ended up smeared over the giant hush puppy soft toy in a very posh independent shop. My almost 2 year old dd was violently kicking the shop manageress and I was beside myself with embarrassment.
Sorry absolutely no advice at all, but am watching with interest!!

BeeBopBunny · 10/10/2011 12:34

Right, we're off to the shoe shop this afternoon for another screaming fit attempt to get DDs next pair of shoes. We've been in intensive training - Peppa Pig's new shoes dvd twice a day. So now we have a Peppa Pig dvd addiction to deal with too! I shall go fully armed with chocolate buttons and it will no doubt go splendidly...

Grin Peppa Pig dvd addiction to deal with too, what about getting her some peppa pig shoes?

MadameSin · 10/10/2011 13:16

Your post made me smile. My ds1 used to kick the crap out of the Clarke's fitters ... it was a total nightmare taking him to get his feet measured Blush I had to go to a different store each time as they got to know him at my local. He just wouldn't have none of it. He stopped behaving in this way around 5. He is now a delightful 15 year old. His little brother however, who has ADHD loves having his feet measured and has never objected.....weird! Smile
