15 months and no words

Just hoping people can put my mind at rest, my dd 15 mths today does not have any words. She chatters away in jibberish and points at everything but despite my best efforts of talking her through everything she doesn't seem to know any words.

She says mamamama but that's it. Once or twice I have thought she has said birdie when we're looking at birds but that's it. I do have picture cards and I have about two book sessions a day.

People say often say they are either early walkers or early talkers my dd bless her is neither. Cruising well now and walking while I hold one hand well.

She is very animated and appears to follow simple instructions. How can I help her?

Mine didn't have any words at 15 months. My God, she doesn't stop talking now at 24 months. I signed with her and from 13-18 months she signed a lot, but then stopped once she discovered the power of speech.

my ds is 16 months and only says 2 words, daddy and daisy ( his sisters name). He seems to understand much of what we say to him though so Im not worried, theyre still very little :)

None of my 3 were saying anything clearly, other than mama and papa at that age and 2 of them were several months off walking too! DS3 is only starting to walk at 21 months, but as the other 2 really accelerated from no speech to non-stop chatter between 2 - 2.6 I'm waiting for it all to come in a hurry.

I was worrying about the same thing a few months OP! Ds is now 18 months, and says a couple of words, and a lot of animal noises. Try not to worry, like Frankie says, they're still very little, and will do it when they're ready :)

My lad wasn't talking until about a month ago (over 2) and only started with the odd"mama /dada" at about 18m so I wouldn't fret. He has gone from babbling to three or four word sentences in a matter of weeks, which HV said is quite normal for late starters - she says they do a lot of thinking about it and don't need much practice! He was exactly the same with walking (at 1.6, also fairly late) went from crawl to sprint in about a week.

If you're like me and you can't just chill but have to rechannel that anxiety then, drop the picture cards and buy and use this book instead:

If when she points at stuff she also looks back at you to see if you've noticed what she's showing you then she is doing great!

My daughter (28 months) didnt use any words meaningfully until 15 months. Her speech is now really very good for her age. I was a bit worried at your daughters age but I think you need to give her a few more months - in the grand scheme of things knowing the word 'duck' at 12 months doesnt take much catching up with once they get going

if you are sure that her hearing is fine, relax.
ds had his first words at 18 months, no babbling before either.
he starts school tomorrow and is a very confident talker.

Similar position here with 16mo DS. Crawls on all fours and will walk holding one hand for a short distance indoors but only manages maximum of four steps independantly. Speach wise he says 'ball' and 'door' and a bit of 'mumumum' but that's it. He's a gorgeous cuddly little chap, and gets into mischief enough already. Not really worried about his walking/talking delays as physically he's big and ok. Nice to hear I'm not alone with a late walker though.

Ds was the same. Had maybe two words at that age. He talks in sentences now, nearly three. Has very large vocab. Still not where his sister was at that age but hv has no concerns at all. Reminded me that he is within the normal range, dd1 was not!

DD is 15 months and doesn't really have any words I don't think, sometimes it sounds like she says something and then she doesn't say it again, so who knows! She does communicate very well though, by pointing etc, and I know she understands loads of what we say, e.g. if I say "can you get the ball" etc she does.

I think it's way too early for you to worry :)

Oh and Dd has only just started standing, so she's not an early walker either!!
