SGrowth for short ten year old girl who has started menstruating...

My niece has only just turned 10 and started her period a few days ago. She is only 4'9" so I'm wondering, will she pretty much stop growing now?? Can anything at all be done so that she has a chance to keep growing a little bit? Both her parents are short, around 5'4", but not that short. TIA.

I've never heard that you stop growing when your periods start.

growth slows at onset of menses as it generally indicates the end of puberty - but it does not stop entirely.

i started my periods at that age and average height (so probably around her height) and i made it to 5'2".

Robert Winston reckons once menstruation starts a girl grows on average only 2.6 inches more un height.

if her father is 5'4" that is very below average for a man. so she can expect to be below average also.

I wonder if this would get more replies if reposted in 'preteens'. I would be interested to know if Robert Winston's prediction of growth after starting menstruation is fairly accurate or not .

If it helps, I started my periods at 12 and it kicked off a big growth spurt so that for the one and only time in my life, I was taller than my twin sister. I made it to 5'7 before I stopped growing at 16 and my twin overtook me again.

anecdotal I know, but I started my period at 13, and then over the course of the summer holidays grew about six inches. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules on that one.

I started my period at 9 and half. Was 4 foot 7. I am now almost 5foot 6

It wouldn't be dreadful if she did stop at 5' ish. I'm 4'11" and it hasn't blighted my life in any way.

Camdancer I agree, I'm short myself and whilst I don't mind my height in the slightest, I do feel I'd be able to manage my weight better if I was a little taller.
