What do you do when you're child goes 'in one'!

Ds (8) is generally fine, however if he's tired/hungry and not getting his own way, he tends to go mardy and in one! Doesn't have a tantrum just general teenage back chat and mardy! Shouting just ignites the situation - though occasionally I think its necessary to voice its unacceptable behaviour. I generally ignore it.

Anyone else got any good methods?

Prevention! Snacks and drinks to ward off grumpiness before it arises. Cuddles. Quiet time by himself.

Letting him embarrass himself in eyes of older aspirational kids has been a great solution. I mention it afterwards with humour, no escape - you had a right strop on about dragging out to buy shoes but in the end you really liked.. blah blah, also people think you're a right plonker when you do that.
