This is day five with our newborn and my first post...just want to check if this is all normal...she sleeps a lot and has to be wakened every 3-4 hours for her feed..I don't know how long she would sleep on for otherwise but am scared to leave her too long...she is feeding but not for long,10mins on average of proper sucking and gulping in a good one hour session of burping and fussing and trying to get her to latch on...is that enough for her??she then falls back to sleep!!

3-4 hours for feeding is normal. So early stages, speak to your midwife/health visitor if you are worried. Most babies know what they need and will feed according. My DS1 fed for about an hour, whereas DS2 fed for about 10 minutes. Enjoy her sleeping while she does - it will probably all change soon enough.

Newborns do sleep loads and I would think that if she is hungry she will let you know about it! My dcs managed to stay awake for 1 hour before falling back off to sleep when they were that age! Opposite problem now!! Congratulations by the way!!

hi - how is her weight and her poo? If weight is ok -she probably get weighed today/tommorrow will she? and her poo is becoming yellow then ok. I would wake after 3 hours in the day

My newborn slept loads and had to be woken to feed. Normal.

Dunno about length of feeds, that was all a bit of a nightmare! Check with mw or hv next week if you're worried.

I would say completely normal, you just have to go with the flow (sorry to be cliched). My DS would take an hour to feed and half an hour to wind and go back to sleep for 30 minutes then it would start all over again. 3-4 hourly feeds are good.

I'd be inclined not to let her sleep through feeds - so don't let her go more than about three hours. You want her to be feeding quite a bit to get your milk up and put on weight. I presume your milk has come in? DD used to feed for about 45 minutes at a time but DS only about 10 minutes so it varies quite a lot. You'll soon gauge whether she's getting enough.

Thank you everyone!she was weighed yesterday and midwife happy,had only dropped from 6.12- 6.9 which apparently is very good!she was two weeks early too! Feel more relaxed now!!they come with such worry!!!

Also,if shes happy to sleep from feed to feed should we just let her?? Rereading different things about having her away for a certain amount if hours in the day and playing with her?? Or should we just be thankful for now uf she's happy to sleep??

4 hours between feeds is a long time for a newborn. Some babies are sleepier than others, I used to have to wake up DD2 for feeds when she was tiny. Kellymom is a great breastfeeding resource and if you ask on the BF forum there are lots of people on there that know their stuff.

certainly don't worry about playing with her. Get some rest when she does. But i might be inclined to see if she'll feed a little more often as others have said.
