How to you get a toddler to poo in the potty / toilet?

My 2 1/2 ds has got the weeing business sussed (at the mo') but won't entertain the idea of pooing anywhere but in his pants. He knows when he is having a poo as he takes himself off to a corner of the room, and will sometimes announce it, at which point I suggest the potty / toilet but he gets quite anti, so I'm reluctant to make a big deal of it in case I scare him off completely. Any suggestions? I've spoken to a couple of mums from work but no-one seems to have had the same problem.

We have not made any progress with getting out of nappies, so I can't speak from experience, but a friend uses bribes for poos and gives her dd a small treat for doing one in the potty. I have also heard of people putting a nappy in the potty for the toddler to poo in, makes it less scary perhaps? I think the idea of 'losing' what seems like quite a large part of your body must freak them out, as it seems a common problem.

We have this problem with dd and from reading threads on here, I've realised it's fairly common. I think your relaxed approach is the best otherwise pooing could become a real issue leading to holding in, constipation etc. It's a real bore I know, but some kids are just not psychologically ready for pooing in the potty till sometime after they are dry. Sorry - no magic solution, just LOADS of patience.
