Give him soft toys/brightly coloured ones for now..theres plenty of time for him to play with harder plasticcy things

Does it make a difference if he's sitting upright?

My daughter is five months - I give her soft toys when she's lying on her back and harder things when she's sitting upright or lying on her tummy. I find she's much less likely to hit herself in the face because she's not lifting the (relatively heavy) toy over her head
