18mo just climbed out of cot with a thud - wwyd?

18mo DD climbed out of her cot while I was running her bath this evening. I've been worried she might do this for a whil;e, so there were pillows on the floor, but judging by the thud she made I think she managed to miss them. Anyway, I'm wondering what to do now. Should I think about a proper bed? I'd hoped not to do that for a while, but it would make the fall shorter. Or would that just encourage her to get out of bed? She rocks and rolls around a lot in the night so I can't imagine she would stay in a bed all night, even with cot sides.

I've put the winter duvet off our king sized bed on her floor tonight with pillows on top in case she tries it again, but I'm hoping she'll be too tired to try (she is normally exhausted by bedtimne and sleeps well). Any advice?

I put DS in a toddler bed at about this age, when he started doing this, and he was fine. I put his cot mattress on the floor next to him for a couple of weeks, but he only fell out a couple of times. Someone lent us a bed guard - bad idea - he just climbed over it!

Thanks Bike. I just can't imagine DD lying meekly in bed when the way of escape is so obvious! Did your DS not rampage round his room as soon as you left it? Or if they are tired enough do they just switch from the cot to the bed with no problems?

Oh, just thought, I expect she'll find it harder to climb out at night as she's in a sleeping bag - that should impede her progress. Perhaps I should pit some lead weights in it

Go for a bed - my DD was in a full sized at 19 months.
After a few evenings of plonking her back in bed a few times she got the message and we've never had problems since.

Put her in a bed and put a stairgate at the door so she can't escape!

Actually, he surprised us and didn't rampage around at all, and he was in a duvet by then too. We put a stair gate on his door though to stop him wandering downstairs when he got up in the morning. His bed is full size single, but very low.

we had to move ds from cot to (toddler) bed by this age for exactly this reason. no problem at all. better do it soon before she really hurts herself...

Sympathy! Ds started climbing out at 9 months. For a short time I wedged his bed between the wall and our bed so he couldn't get out one side and was only onto our bed. then I gave up and he slept for a few months on a mattress on the floor. We were trying to move and the mattress was the best solution because it could be hidden for viewings, and another bed would have made the other bedroom very crowded.

Our DS would climb out of the cot easily if we ever let him in there without his gro bag. I have been dreading the really hot nights but luckily (!) summer has been quite cool this year. We just make sure he is in his grobag then there's no chance he can climb.

Once ds2 climbed out of his cot for the second time he went into a bed. He could have really hurt himself doing that whereas in a bed I could use a bed guard and he was less likely to hurt himself.

Put her in a bed with a bed guard and a stair gate across the door.

DD managed to climb out with a gro-bag on when she was 28mo, she came shuffling into my room looking thrilled with herself. Needless to say, I was not thrilled.

LOL Meglet, that is scary! I think DS is a little way off that, the bag is keeping him contained for now. Going to keep him in it for the winter, the house is very cold and a nice warm bag will be much better than a Duvet.

Scuttles off to google adult gro bags...
