Stopping the bitting

DS is 17 months old and for the last few days he has bitten children at nursery. It happens when he wants a toy another child is using or he has a toy and someone wants it.
I try to 'teach' him the sharing notion but I feel embarrassed every time I have to sign the incident form when I pick him up.
What can I do to stop this behaviour?

Does he bite you? If you're not there at the time, it's going to be quite hard for you to be able to do anything about it. How are nursery dealing with it?

He tries to bite me but I always managed to stop him and tell him off before.
Nursery does time out when it happens.

I think loads of kids bite at this age, so though it is a difficult phase it shouldn't last forever.

DS2 was a culprit, but we managed to get him to kiss instead of biting and that seemed to work - ie "no bite, just kiss" - resulting in some big sloppy smackers!

Meant to add - isn't he too young for time outs? Our nursery tried this with DCs when they were each around 2 and even that was too young...

I know how you feel! I had to sign an incident form today when my 16 month DS bit another child on the cheek. I felt so ashamed and hate the thought that he has hurt another child and he thought it was funny to bite his father tonight as well. All advice is to tell the child that biting hurts and is not very nice but its so difficult when you are not there
