Rocking - worried!

My 5 mth old ds has just started to sit up unaided but after a while he starts rocking backwards and forwards. It didn't really bother me at first as I thought he was just testing things out and balancing but now all my friends have started commenting on it so it has started to bother me. Has anyone elses baby done this? Should I be worried? It does make life very difficult and messy at meal times!

Lamin, sorry I don't remember if my daughter did this at this age but she certainly went through a rocking stage at some point. Wish I could be of more help - why don't you call the doc if you are worried?

Lamin don't worry. Both my twin ds' did this for a while (and sometimes still do at 21 months old.) I was worried sick that it meant they had possibly development problems but not so.

Apparently bubs use this as a way of comforting themselves and can be a sign of intelligence! I read this on the Dr Chris Green site and it was verified by my health visitor as something babies do. My two did it when they were sleepy and bored and it was, so she says, a sign their over-active brain was trying to wind down!

Go see your health visitor for the peace of mind.

I knew someone who used to rock back and forwards all the time on the settee - probably about 2 at the time. She's a solicitor now. Sure it is just a comforting thing but I do remember her mum being a little worried about it. You're a mum therefore you worry

Lamin- I wouldn't worry in such a young child. My friend's twins used to rock a lot. Its a comfort movement.

Thanks everyone - I will mention it to the HV. My gut feel is there is nothing to worry about but it is difficult when people keep pointing it out and asking about it.
