Bedwetting 10yr old

DS was 10 last week. 2 weeks ago I found his pjama trousers soaking wet in the morning. I didnt say anything, thought perhaps he had made a mad dash to the loo in the morning and not pulled pants down. This morning when I went to make the beds, his trousers were soaking and the bed was wet. He has not done this since he was 2 and I cant figure it out. Do you think there could be a health problem? or stress? Any one else had this. Getting a bit worried as he has signed up for french exchange trip and that could be disastrous for him.

Hmm, my stepDS2 who is almost 10 was a chronic bedwetter from age 5 to 8. I think his wetting was to do with subconscious stress as his parents separated when he was 5. The wetting started soon after. He was always surprised that he had done it as he said he just didn't know that he needed it. We've always made sure that he has a wee before he goes to bed but it didn't seem to help. He eventually grew out of it when I'd been living with them for a few months, perhaps he felt more settled and secure, I don't know.

I don't think that there is anything that can really be done apart from the obvious no drinks in the hour before bed and a good long wee immediatly before you tuck him in. Hopefully he will grow out of it soon. Have you asked him about it? Is he stressed or worried about something ? If not then it might be worth having a word with your GP, not necesarily with DS the first time as it is bound to be embarrassing for him. If GP can reassure you or give you advice then you can apply it without too much embarrasment to DS. Whereas if the GP wants to meet DS to talk to him/check him over then at least you know that it on't be a wasted/embarrasing journey for him.

Thanks WSM, glad your stepds grew out of it. The odd thing is that it has started at 10, I wouldnt be worried if it was one of my younger ones. I have some urine test sticks from an Atkins diet so will test his urine tonight, but if nothing there I think your idea of going to the GP without him is a good idea.

I would suggest taking him to the gp to rule out a urine infection firstly, then take it from there.

At that age I think it's a warning sign of something. It could be minor or it could be something more. I would certainly take him to the gp to check for urinary infections or possibly something else (did I read somewhere that's it's symptom of diabetes??) and if it's not that I would try to find out if there is something happening at school etc. that is bothering him. Bullying? Nasty teacher? My step son had a short bout of bedwetting around 7 and it clearly coincided with excitement/anxiety...the night before going on holiday, the night before going home to his mother ....
