Lumps in 5 week old babies neck- really worried

Hi everyone
Not sure whether this is the correct forum for this concern but if anyone can help I would be really grateful.

I've just noticed two lumps in my babies neck- both on left side, one just behind ear and one about 5cm below in neck. When I touch them she deosn't seem to be in pain. I am really scared as don't know what this could be.

I'm going to go to the doc's first thing tomorrow AM but for peace of mind wondered if anyone has ever seen anything like this and whether you may be able to let me know what it could be?

Thanks
Jx

Do they move around a bit when you touch them? Ds has a lump about the size of a pea on his neck that he's had since a baby, which you can wiggle around a bit. It's apparently a blocked node. Completely harmless. It bothers DS now (5) as he fiddles with it and makes it sore.

I took my ds to the GP once about a lump in his neck. Turned out to be just a gland which was enlarged because he had a slight infection. Completely normal and absolutely nothing to worry about. I hadn't realised the glands went so far around his neck and ear.

Thank neolara x

I will def post what doc says tomorrow- am hoping it's just swollen glands but she hasn't had a cold or anything.
Just another thing to worry about!

DS2 had two lumps. One at the back of his neck and one just under his jawline. Both turned out to be harmless birthmarks. They appeared (or I noticed them) at around 9 weeks and are still there (he is 14 months),. I am told they should fade eventually. They don't cause him any problem and are apparently quite common.

CucumberMuncher · 22/05/2011 20:20

DD had exactly the same at that age.

I legged it to the doctors, she said it was just a fatty lump and it should go away. And it did Smile

She'll be fine, but the doctors will put your mind at rest.

amatuermummy · 22/05/2011 21:01

My DD had two lumps on the back of her neck, at the base of her skull. She's now 11 months old and they've gone. Note sure what they were but they never bothered her.

25goingon95 · 22/05/2011 21:09

My DD had this around the same age and i was frantic, i posted on here panicking and then took her to the doctor. It was just glands :) They went away soon after. Hope this reassures you a little.

CucumberMuncher · 22/05/2011 21:42

Seems like a lot of babies have them Smile

Hope you are a bit calmed op

DS2 had loads of these. I hink they are due to something to do with fighting an infection.

vespalover · 22/05/2011 21:46

My DS had a lump, similar to what you are describing. Was v worried until doctor confirmed, as stated above, it was an enlarged gland fighting infection ( excema) and nothing to worry about.

moajab · 22/05/2011 22:07

My DS had a lump just below ear that I noticed at a few weeks old. He had had no infections or any illnesses at that point, but the doctor said it was a gland. I'm not sure how long he had it for, but it's gone now (aged 9 years!)

Jezabelle · 22/05/2011 22:28

Took my DD to docs with a lump in neck. Was really worried too, but was nothing to worry about. Just fighting infection thing. Stop Googling!!

mum765 · 22/05/2011 22:52

Mine had a lump too at a few weeks old - was told it was a swollen lymph node for fighting off infection. She had a bad cold shortly after.

jasper1980 · 23/05/2011 09:13

my ds(4) had one, he had to go for a blood test to be sure(was referred from the docs), they took blood, he was a brave boy. 2 days later the consultant called and started the conversation like this "I am very sorry to have to tell you this"....my face went pale apparently and it was the longest pause of my life as he proceeded to say " we have lost DS's blood, can he come for a repeat test"!!!

Relief on my part, Ds was not happy thoughGrin....on the plus side he was just fighting an infection and the glands just never completely went down. Still there now infact and very common!

Hope all is ok!

JenniferR · 26/05/2011 15:51

Thank you so much everyone. Doc confirmed the same. Lottie is just fighting an infection and it's a swollen gland- PHWEW!!!!!!!!!!!!
