One handed clap

DP's family do a weird one handed clap thing at my baby and my nephew (SILs baby)

We never had any babies in our family except me and my bro, and Ive never seen anyone else do this. MIL is a nursery nurse though. Is this some kind of developmental play thing like peek-a-boo that I dont know because Ive never really come into contact with babies? Should I be doing it?

I'm with Tee.. what's a one handed clap?

Tee2072 · 20/05/2011 16:43

Can you describe it more? How do you clap one handed?!?!

hotcrossSES · 20/05/2011 16:44

It may be weird but what is it?

monkoray · 20/05/2011 16:44

if its what i think it is, its a wave. its like a wave that people tend to only use for babies. Nothing developmental about it - they are just waving at your DC

Mammie81 · 20/05/2011 16:45

Clap the palm of your hand with the fingers of that hand. Thats all there is to it. Its not a wave.

Ive googled it. Its the baby milk sign. Thanks for all the help

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 20/05/2011 16:49

That's a wave. It has nothing to do with development. Ignore it.

Tee2072 · 20/05/2011 16:50

Well then they should be saying 'milk' as they do it

hotcrossSES · 20/05/2011 16:50

I would also call that a wave.

I think the baby milk sign is more of a clenched fist opening and closing with fist the other way (thumb on top and little finger at bottom)

DaisySteiner · 20/05/2011 16:52

It's only a sign for baby milk if they and the baby know what it means! Otherwise it's a wave as others have said. What context do they use it in? Are they greeting her or saying goodbye? Or asking if she wants milk?!

Mammie81 · 20/05/2011 16:54

No they sing as they do it. Like they are clapping.

DaisySteiner · 20/05/2011 16:55

Weird. Are they pretending to have maracas?

belindarose · 20/05/2011 16:56

Can you ask them, if it's worrying you?

Mammie81 · 20/05/2011 16:59

I dont want to ask, they think they know everything and would belittle me. Hence Im asking here. Blush

Its really like they are just clapping with one hand, its not waving at all as its not in that context.

You are going to have a very difficult life if you don't start speaking up to them now, while your baby is small, if you don't understand something.

So they belittle you? Ignorance is not bliss.
